Privacy Policy
Your writing is yours. Here's what we do with it.
Last updated November 1, 2026
The short version
- TomFiction only opens the Google Doc you use it beside, and only while you use it.
- It only changes your doc when you tap to: a fix, formatting, a citation, or words you wrote for the coach to place.
- Your doc's text is sent to get you suggestions and scores. Our server doesn't keep it.
- We don't sell your data, show ads, or train AI on your writing.
- TomFiction is for students 13 and older.
What TomFiction collects
Your Google account
When you sign in, Google tells our server your account's ID number and email address. We keep the ID number, so your plan and limits follow you. We don't store your email address.
Your TomFiction account
For each account, our database keeps:
- your plan, and when Pro or your free Pro week started and ends
- your referral code, who invited you, and the rewards you've earned
- usage counts: words checked, scores, coach turns and AI self-check words, per day or month
- the total words you've checked, and whether you've had a score yet
- if you pay, the customer and subscription IDs that Stripe gives us
Your writing
When you use a feature, TomFiction sends what that feature needs to our server: the text of the doc you're in, the assignment you pasted, your answers to the Write questions (typed or spoken), or your messages to the coach. The server passes it to the service that does the work (listed below), sends you the result, and doesn't save it.
Talking instead of typing
When you tap Say it, Chrome's built-in speech recognition turns what you say into text. Chrome may send the audio to Google's speech service to do that. TomFiction only gets the text, the same as if you'd typed it, and never records or keeps audio.
Links you cite, and sources TomFiction finds
When you paste a link in Sources, our server visits that page to read its title, author and date. When you tap Find sources, our server sends your assignment's title and summary (or the topic you type), your main point, your plan's points and the links of sources you've already saved or been shown (so it can skip them) to Anthropic, whose Claude model searches the web for pages that fit. Our server then visits those pages the same way.
On your computer
TomFiction keeps your work for each doc in Chrome's storage on your computer: the assignment, your answers, your plan, the list of changes for History, your sources and your settings (like your level and citation style). It stays there until you remove TomFiction. The welcome page asks your birth month and year only to check you're 13 or older; it doesn't save them.
How TomFiction uses your Google data
TomFiction asks Google for permission to see and edit your Google Docs, because that's how it reads your paper and applies the changes you choose. It uses that permission only for the doc you have TomFiction open beside, while you use it. It never opens your other files, and it never changes your doc unless you tap to.
TomFiction's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We don't use Google data for ads, don't sell it, don't use it to train AI models, and don't let people read it except where you ask us to (for example, for support), for security, or where the law requires.
Who helps us run TomFiction
- Cloudflare runs our server and database.
- Anthropic provides the Claude AI models behind suggestions, scores, questions, plans, coaching and finding sources (including the web searches for them). Under Anthropic's commercial terms, it doesn't use this data to train its models.
- Pangram Labs runs the private AI self-check. Your doc's text goes to Pangram only when you run it (Pro).
- Crossref looks up the details of a DOI you cite.
- Stripe handles payments. We never see your card number.
- Google handles sign-in and holds your Google Docs. Through Chrome, it may also turn speech into text when you use Say it.
We share only what each of these needs to do its job.
How long we keep it
- Your writing: not kept by our server after it answers you.
- Your TomFiction account: until you ask us to delete it.
- Error logs: our server logs errors, without your doc's text, and Cloudflare keeps them for a short time.
- On your computer: until you remove TomFiction or clear its data.
Your choices
- Delete your account: email us from the Google account you use with TomFiction and we'll delete it.
- Remove your local data: remove TomFiction from Chrome.
- Take back Google access: go to your Google account's connections and remove TomFiction.
- Cancel Pro: tap TomFiction at the top of the panel (it shows a PRO badge), then Manage or cancel.
Students under 13
TomFiction is for students 13 and older. The welcome page turns TomFiction off for anyone younger. If we learn we have information from someone under 13, we'll delete it. Parents and guardians can email us about their child's account.
Keeping it safe
Everything travels over HTTPS. Our server checks your Google sign-in on every request, and the keys for the services above are stored as encrypted secrets, never in the extension.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change matters, we'll let you know before it applies.
